The British School at Athens
|Collection event||Phylakopi Excavation 1896-1899|
|Scope and Content||Part of a group of images from explorations and excavations on the island of Melos conducted by the British School at Athens from 1896 to 1899. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Phylakopi pottery: Incised ware. Painted geometric. Mykenaean".|
|Notes||The dates are based on the excavation seasons at Phylakopi. Pottery sequences were not established at the time of the Phylakopi excavations and geometric designs were considered to be pre-'Mycenaean'; the term 'Mycenaean' was applied to both Cretan Minoan and Mainland Helladic pottery.|
