The British School at Athens
|Collection event||Phylakopi Excavation 1896-1899|
|Scope and Content||Part of a group of images from explorations and excavations on the island of Melos conducted by the British School at Athens from 1896 to 1899. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Phylakopi pottery: painted geometric, Mykenaean sherd".|
|Notes||The dates are based on the excavation seasons at Phylakopi. Only two fragments of the large vessel (lower part of image) is shown in Phylakopi pl. VII, photographed prior to piecing together; also see BSA SPHS 01/2731.7014 for those two pieces. Pottery sequences were not established at the time of the Phylakopi excavations and 'Mycenaean' was applied to both Cretan Minoan and Mainland Helladic pottery. Geometric designs, at the time of excavation, were considered to be pre-'Mycenaean'.|
