Scope and Content Elevation (East end, next to central apse)-Rough sketches of architectural members (capitals). This is a preliminary drawing. It is entitled in pencil on the upper right-hand corner: 'San Donato Murano. Rough Sketch done on the spot for a drawing of the apse'. It is annotated in pencil. It is initialed (RWS) and dated in pencil in lower right-hand corner.
Further information The basilica of Santa Maria e San Donato is located in Murano, Italy, and dates in its present state to the 13th century. The original building was founded in the 7th century and has been extensively restored several times thoughout its history. The church is noted for the simplicity of its exterior and the complexity of its richly decorated interior (the marble-and-mosaic floor was laid in 1140).
