Project Palaikastro Excavation 1902-1906
Scope and Content Part of a group of images from the British School at Athens excavations at Palaikastro, Crete in the 1902-1905. The original description in the SPHS negative register reads: "Painted Dippers from Palaikastro". The drawing was possibly done by R.M. Dawkins. Listed as a Colour Slide in the SPHS negative register (A series), but the negative is black and white.
Notes The objects were found in the second season of excavation at Palaikastro and the discussion of the objects in the excavation report for that year. The A series of negatives were created for colour slides produced from a colour drawings, and date from 1913. However, the extant negatives marked in the A series are black and white. Filler or dipper is an old term for rhyton. Since this image appeared in the 1913 slide catalogue, the earliest date is 1913. Marked as A 73b. A photograph of the actual rhyta on appears in related record BSA SPHS 01/4236.8783.
