Further information Sikinos, an island in the north Aegean Sea famous for its wine, was inhabited as early as the Mycenaean period. In 1307, the Byzantines lost the island to the Spanish forces which were trying to establish themselves in the Aegean, and in 1566 it officially became part of the Ottoman Empire. Six Byzantine churches and numerous post-Byzantine with remarkable fresco decoration survive on the island.
