The three-aisled domed basilica of Panagia Phaneromene at Salamina is a monument with strong western/Italian influences. The façade of the building consists of Byzantine spolia, and the attached narthex is contemporary to the nave. The interior of the church is almost dark while a remarkably extensive iconographical programme decorates the interior walls. The building could be considered as a representative example of the so-called ‘Ottoman’ baroque, the predominant stylistic trend in the architecture/architectural decoration of the Greek mainland during the period of the Turkish occupation. |
