Notes Date of the image is probably prior to 1890, probably to 1888 when the donors were thought to be in Cyprus with E.A. Gardner (see JHS 9: 170). Photographs by Dyer and Macmillan were submitted to the Hellenic Society's collections and catalogued, see JHS 11 (1890) p. xxxviii.
Further information Bellapais Abbey, also known as the White Chapel or Episcopia, is located close to Kyrenia. It was already inhabited during Roman times and prospered particularly under the Lusignan King Hugn III (1267-1284) who restored the buildings, lived and was buried in its premises. The complex fell into decay as early as the late 15th c. The buildings form a square. The main church in the south-west corner recalls Cistercian buildings and Gothic churches in central and southern France, particularly St Pierre du Queyroix at Limoges. The cloisters were added after the completion of the church. The refectory is one of the largest and handsomest ever preserved. A number of other auxiliary buildings, equally impressive, survive within the enclosure. Bellapais was legendary for its beauty and the power of its confraternity during the 14th c.
