Project Hasluck in Mount Athos 1911
Scope and Content Part of a series of images taken by F.W. Hasluck during the course of his visit to Mount Athos in 1911. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Athos: Kelli, near Karyes".
Notes Date based on Hasluck's visit to Mount Athos to research his book, Mount Athos and its Monasteries (1924). Kelli of St. Nicholas Burazeri is a dependant of the Hilandar Monastery, but is very close to Karyes.
Further information Kellia or "cells" are unattached to sketae, but are completely dependent on monasteries who, in turn, are responsible for the upkeep of the kelli's buildings. A typical building of a kelli consists of a corridor with cells ending in a chapel. The inhabitants of a kelli are generally engaged in agricultural work or fishing. They also provide labour to the monasteries on special occasions.
