About the Winifred Lamb Personal Papers

The Winifred Lamb Personal Papers largely cover the life and work of the pioneering British female archaeologist during her time in Greece and Turkey between 1918 and 1952.

The collection contains letters, a travel diary, essays, offprints, photographs and photograph albums, created by Winifred during her academic career. They especially relate to her travels and excavations at Greek sites such as Sparta and Mycenae, where she first worked as a BSA Student, and then others such as Thermi on the island of Lesvos and Kusura in Turkey, where she became the Director of the excavations- the first female BSA Student to do so. The papers also include descriptions of Winifred's time at the BSA, Greek life and significant events during this period.

The file contains copies of works by Winifred Lamb concerning her work and life in Greece and Turkey. In them she describes her travels, the people she met and worked with, their customs and unfortunate incidents.

A piece about her foreman Andonios Doungos during the excavations of Thermi in Lesvos. It includes mentions of Molyvo, her landlady Evtychia and her daughter Artemis, assistant foreman Akindynos, Thermiotes, Feast of St. Constantine, Athens, Mytilene and her pickman Manoli.

A piece about a widow in the village ‘The Towers of Thermi’ and Lamb’s troubles letting a house from her. It also mentions Mitilini, Molyvo and Andoni the foreman.

A piece about first aid at her excavation site of Thermi, near Mitilini, including Kosti’s fingertip being cut-off by Chresto and Michali Pandelis ‘The Major’ applying first aid, a stone being dropped on Photis Chatsigeorgiou’s foot and Aristomenes striking Michales Tsarakeles with a knife. It also mentions Ianni and Panagiotes

A piece about her memories of Mitilini, one her friends in Molyvo and an incident with the police regarding antiquities smuggling. It also mentions Thermi, Caique, trial excavation near Syngrion, Barba Stavros and her staff Andonios Doungos, Chresto, Hippokrates and Athanas.

A diary about her experience travelling through North West Greece and Turkey in May 1928. It includes references to S.S. Tasos, Piraeus, Levkas, Vonitsa, Anaktorion, Hagia Sophia, Panagia, Patras, Kavassers, Paliambela, Ruga, Palimbey, Loutraki, Spartos, Arta, Makinoros Pass, Bridge of Arta, the Petra incident, Preveza, Nikopolis, Exo Panagia, Iannina and Dodona.

A piece about a visit to a Turkish school in Sandikli to find an antique stone brazier on the 25th April c. 1935, and resulted in her first visit to Kusura. It also mentions Afyonkarahisar.

Epilogue [LAM/2/2/7], Epilogue, c.1952

A piece concluding her recollections about her excavations in Kusura, time spent in Turkey and a visit 16 years later. It also refers to Afyonkarahisar.

The file contains published academic material by Winifred Lamb concerning her work in Greece and Turkey. She writes discourses on antiquities, reviews and details her excavations and archaeological finds.

Photographs [LAM/3], Series, Photographs, 1920 – c.1934

These are Winifred Lamb’s personal and professional collection, which she took in various locations throughout Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey during the course of her work and travels. These include Thermi and Kusura.

Albums [LAM/3/1], Sub-series, Albums, 1920 – 1934

These 18 volumes were created by Winifred Lamb and document her travels, excavations, friends and colleagues such as Lilian Chandler and Bernard and Dorothy Ashmole. The spines were labelled in roman numberals by Lamb; volume V was not received from the Lamb estate. Some of the photographs may have been taken by some of her colleagues and later given to her. It seems that if a photograph has initials in the bottom corner it was a way to record who took/gave those photographs to her. Winifred Lamb captioned the images in black ink (fountain pen). Helen Waterhouse later added identifications on the pages of these albums in black ball point pen, as well as on pieces of paper. Lesley Beaumont also did these identifications in pencil.

The album contains various images and postcards of Athens, the B.S.A., Delphi, Marathon, Spata, Aegina, Parnes, Phyle, Sounion, Greek life and colleagues. Spine reads "I 1920"
