Scope and Content Part of a group of images from explorations and excavations on the island of Melos conducted by the British School at Athens from 1896 to 1899. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Phylakopi pottery: painted geometric, naturalistic flower pot".
Notes The dates are based on the excavation seasons at Phylakopi. Note that 1A on plate XXVII of the Phylakopi publication shows the top view of a pedestal vase - see BSA SPHS 01/1934.5037 for the side view. The bowl in the bottom right of the image shows the top view of BSA SPHS 01/2740.7023. Pottery sequences were not established at the time of the Phylakopi excavations and geometric designs were considered to be pre-'Mycenaean'; the term 'Mycenaean' was applied to both Cretan Minoan and Mainland Helladic pottery.
