Further information | From its beginning, Vatopedi has always been a large and prosperous monastery. Its early traditions include the usual tales: founding by Constantine, destroyed by Julian, re-founded by Theodosius, sacked by the Arabs. However, documentation indicates that it was founded by three Adrianopolitans in the late 10th century and also recognises that early benefactors included the founders of the Hilandar Monastery. Over the centuries it has had many Imperial and noble benefactors. It is a spacious monastery with numerous chapels along with the 10th century katholikon (modelled on that of Lavra) dedicated to the Annunciation. Hasluck, in 1911, describes the date of the buildings as early - from the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries along with restorations and the addition of a hospital in the 19th. Hasluck, F.W. 1924.
