Scope and Content Ground plan. The drawing is entitled: 'Church of St Dionysius Areopagite'. Further annotation in pencil survives.
Further information Very little survives now of the Byzantine (10th c.?) church of Hagios Dionysios at Areos Pagos. The ruins indicate that the church must have followed the architectural type of a three-aisled basilica with narthex very similar to that of the Pantanassa church (Megalo Monastiri). A small chapel was attached to the ruinous building during the period of the Ottoman occupation. The church must have served as a burial/mortuary monument: a considerable number of tombs have been excavated under the church floor.
