| Further information | The Esphigmenou Monastery is not mentioned in records until the early 11th century, but it is said to have had an earlier foundation. Because it is situated on a flat plain on the coast, it was susceptible to pirate raids. According to Hasluck who visited in 1911, the monastery has always had Russian connections and ranks as one of the lesser important and poorer monasteries.
