The John Pendlebury Family Papers cover the period from 1913 to 1964 and document the life of archaeologist and WWII hero John Devitt Stringfellow Pendlebury, his wife Hilda and their family.

Consists of timetables of John and Hilda Pendlebury’s travels in Crete (10 Feb – 1 Mar 1928, 4-17 May 1928, 26 Apr-13 May 1929, 4 Mar-8 Jul 1930, 8 - 31 Apr 1932, 21 Mar – 9 Jun 1933, 27 – 31 May 1933, 3 Apr – 1 May 1934, 24 Apr-4 Jul 1935, 8 Apr-14 Jun 1936, 5 May – 19 Jul 1937, 10 Apr-17 Jul 1938), with annotated accounts of trips and walks: Eleutherna and Preveli (3 -10 May 1929); Pakhyammos to Psykhro (19 Mar 1930); Knossos to Phaistos via Luctas and Kanli Kasteli [Profítis Ilīas] with Ralph Lavers and Charles Bragg (Amarna staff) [Mar 1930]; Agios Myron, Krousonas, Tylissos (16-17 Apr 1933); a trip with Mary Chubb, Rosaleen Angus and [Seton and Joan] Lloyd (1-9 May 1933); a trip with Romilly and Céline Jenkins (27-31 May [1933]); Phrati (8-9 Jun 1933); West Crete (1935); Fair Havens and the South Coast (1936), Ascent of Mount Dikte (Khristos Peak) [1936?], Ascent of Mount Ida [1936?]; Pakhyammos to Zakro and Hierapetra ([Apr-May] 1938); Tzermiadho to Pakhyammos and Ascent of Stavroménos ([Jul] 1938). [This was possibly all intended for publication at one point]. One journey was published as PEN 5/10 in ‘Archaeology’ in 1964.
Comprises a 2nd draft copy of ‘Travels in Crete’ (PEN 2/4/3/4) with different annotations. Photographs have also been added to illustrate the trips. The account of a journey “Trip to Eleutherna and Preveli May 3rd – May 10th 1929” is annotated as having been published in Archaeology Magazine (Sep 1964).
