About the John Pendlebury Family Papers
The John Pendlebury Family Papers cover the period from 1913 to 1964 and document the life of archaeologist and WWII hero John Devitt Stringfellow Pendlebury, his wife Hilda and their family.
Labelled on reverse as a duplicate print.
The group is composed of 2 [local] men with horses (one pointing a gun into the air) and an [archaeologist] with a dog. [Location not identified].
The identity of the men is unknown, possibly John Pendlebury’s University friends or friends in Athens.
Consists of 5 pages with prints of photographs stuck onto them, labelled in [Hilda Pendlebury’s handwriting]. Contains 5 photographs, 4 of which are later prints of photographs in a photograph album PEN 7/2/4. The 5th seems to be a later print of a photograph which is missing from this same album.
This is similar to a series of photographs of the interior of the Villa Ariadne in a photograph album (PEN 7/2/5).
The only negative which does not have a corresponding print elsewhere in the John Pendlebury Family Papers Archive is of [John Pendlebury] on a horse, wearing an army uniform [c. Jan 1940 at 110th Officer Cadet Training Unit (Cavalry), Weedon, Northamptonshire].

Comprises a negative folder with a handwritten index [in John Pendlebury’s handwriting], containing large format negatives of finds from excavations around the Lasithi Plain (all with reference numbers starting “O”). These are negatives of prints in “Excavations in Lasithi, Crete, B. S. A.” photograph album (PEN 4/3/4). The negative of O.12 (item 12) is more complete than the print in PEN 4/3/4. O.81-O.90 are negatives of drawings, and these were not printed in the photograph album (PEN 4/3/4). Negatives for O.14, O.16, O.37, O.39, O.43-46, O.49, O.51-53, O.67-80, O.91-93, O.95-99 are missing. There should have originally been a follow-on set of negatives for O.101 onwards (prints of which are in the photograph album PEN 4/3/4), but this was not found in the archive.
Consists of timetables of John and Hilda Pendlebury’s travels in Crete (10 Feb – 1 Mar 1928, 4-17 May 1928, 26 Apr-13 May 1929, 4 Mar-8 Jul 1930, 8 - 31 Apr 1932, 21 Mar – 9 Jun 1933, 27 – 31 May 1933, 3 Apr – 1 May 1934, 24 Apr-4 Jul 1935, 8 Apr-14 Jun 1936, 5 May – 19 Jul 1937, 10 Apr-17 Jul 1938), with annotated accounts of trips and walks: Eleutherna and Preveli (3 -10 May 1929); Pakhyammos to Psykhro (19 Mar 1930); Knossos to Phaistos via Luctas and Kanli Kasteli [Profítis Ilīas] with Ralph Lavers and Charles Bragg (Amarna staff) [Mar 1930]; Agios Myron, Krousonas, Tylissos (16-17 Apr 1933); a trip with Mary Chubb, Rosaleen Angas and [Seton and Joan] Lloyd (1-9 May 1933); a trip with Romilly and Céline Jenkins (27-31 May [1933]); Phrati (8-9 Jun 1933); West Crete (1935); Fair Havens and the South Coast (1936), Ascent of Mount Dikte (Khristos Peak) [1936?], Ascent of Mount Ida [1936?]; Pakhyammos to Zakro and Hierapetra ([Apr-May] 1938); Tzermiadho to Pakhyammos and Ascent of Stavroménos ([Jul] 1938). [This was possibly all intended for publication at one point]. One journey was published as PEN 5/10 in ‘Archaeology’ in 1964.
