Wace as members of the 1905-1910 the British School at Athens excavations at Sparta, Laconia. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Sparta Mus. No. 1A. Archaic pyramidal stele, showing bearded man & woman". |
Notes | A commercial image from the English Photographic Company. According to the entry in the Sparta Museum Catalogue (Tod and Wace 1906), it is said to be from a place called Νεροσουρμί S.W. of the Acropolis near the grave in which it came from. On p. 249 of the Museum Catalogue, it indicates that this is originally an English Photographic Company image (catalogue number 1), and that a plaster cast had been made by Martinelli (who operated in Athens), catalogue number 781, mould No. 1296. The plaster cast is said to be extant in the Berlin Museum (as well as other Museums). |
