The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Mr. Atchley's numbering: 434. Aetolia, Old Pleuron, W wall". |
Notes |
The SPHS negative register lists this as "Old Pleuron: W. Wall" but the image is a relief sculpture. The negative contains Atchley's own negative number which matches that in the SPHS register. In addition, there is a faint number 23 on the upper right corder of the sculpture. It depicts part of the frieze from the Temple of Bassae now in the British Museum. The image may not be part of Atchley's group of images, but a substitute image given this number at a late date. However, if it is an image by Atchley, it was art of a group of over 1,000 photographs donated by Mr. Shirley C. Atchley in 1921 (JHS 1922).Therefore, if the specific date is not listed in the register, the images cannot have been produced later than 1921. |
