Scope and Content Part of a collection of images from Dawkins' travel to Pontus to investigate dialects in 1914. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Pontic tombstones shaped like churches".
Notes Date based on Dawkins' travel to the Pontus to investigate Greek dialects. His investigations were never completed due to the outbreak of WWI - see Mackridge BSA 85 (1990) p. 206. Also see B. Olsen (pp. 105-120) in Shankland, D. Archaeology, Anthropology and Heritage in the Balkans and Anatolia. 2004, Istanbul: Isis Press. The same tombstones are shown in BSA SPHS 01/6122.C3535 which places them in the Sürmene district.
