Scope and Content | One of a group of images relating to the British School at Athens: buildings and setting, scholars and students. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Athens: The British School, Lycabettus in background". |
Notes | Latest date based on comparison with SPHS 1901 which probably dates to c. 1887-8 and a similar image from the Byzantine Research Fund (BSA BRF WI.E-40) which was taken in c. 1889-90. Foliage is not quite advanced in this image, but the arbour has been constructed out the back of the house as in BSA BRF WI.E-40, so must date just before these two similar images. Also, numerous images donated by Walter Leaf that were catalogued SPHS 1502 to 1608 that appeared in the 1897 slide catalogue in the Journal of Hellenic Studies, further supports this date. |
