Scope and Content | Ground plan. This is a preliminary drawing entitled, St. Dionysios Areopagite-Athens. Further annotation in pencil survives including part of title in Greek. |
Further information | Very little survives now of the Byzantine (10th c.?) church of Hagios Dionysios at Areos Pagos. The ruins indicate that the church must have followed the architectural type of a three-aisled basilica with narthex very similar to that of the Pantanassa church (Megalo Monastiri). A small chapel was attached to the ruinous building during the period of the Ottoman occupation. The church must have served as a burial/mortuary monument: a considerable number of tombs have been excavated under the church floor. |
