Wace Excavation Diaries. 64c (sticker top of spine)' Stamp of British Museum Dept of Antiquities (inside first title page) crossed out with 'cancelled 17/9/26' written on it. Loose items incude: Letter with envelope, notes with plan and measurements.

Press cuttings from Glasgow Herald, 10 August 1918 and 17 August 1918, and two letters from Alan Wace, 1 September 1918 and 30 September 1918. Wace refers to his letter of 8 August 1918 in The Times Literary Supplement proposing to delete Kirkman Finlay philhellene from the Dictionary of National Biography.

Consists of a typed copy of a letter from Wace (Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology and Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge) which mentions Pendlebury’s undergraduate studies in Cambridge, archaeological work in Knossos and Egypt, publications, travel and archaeological work in the “Near East”, and personal attributes which meant he could work well with others and take on responsibility. No addressee.
Comprises a pro forma letter thanking [Pendlebury] for a copy of ‘The Archaeology of Crete’, signed by A J B Wace (Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology) on behalf of the Committee of Museum of Classical Archaeology.
Thanking Hilda for a letter and relaying an alternative story of John’s death and saying that he would try to see his informant again. Wace also discusses his admiration for John. Stamped “passed by Censor at Head Office”.
Condolence letter sent after a report of John’s death, expressing sympathy and sorrow at John’s death, asking Hilda to pass on condolence’s to [Herbert Pendlebury] and saying that he had written to Helen [Wace].
Subjects include the official notification of John’s death, that the official report had come from Commander [Pool] and Wace had seen [Pool], the circumstances and details of John’s death, a story that John was in the hills with pneumonia (but Wace didn’t think it was true), and sending his sympathy.
