Scope and Content | Part of a collection of images from Dawkins' travel to Pontus to investigate dialects in 1914. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Monastery of Soumela, general view, near Trebizond". |
Notes | Date based on Dawkins' travel to the Pontus to investigate Greek dialects. His investigations were never completed due to the outbreak of WWI - see Mackridge BSA 85 (1990) p. 206. Also see B. Olsen (pp. 105-120) in Shankland, D. Archaeology, Anthropology and Heritage in the Balkans and Anatolia. 2004, Istanbul: Isis Press. The image was used for the 1936 Exhibition of Minoan Civilization and the first 50 years work of the BSA at Burlington House in London (337b). The image appears in the SPHS Slide Set by B.I. and I.A.
