Project | Hasluck in Mount Athos 1911 |
Scope and Content | Part of a series of images taken by F.W. Hasluck during the course of his visit to Mount Athos in 1911. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Athos: Pantokratoros: entrance". |
Notes | Date based on Hasluck's visit to Mount Athos to research his book, Mount Athos and its Monasteries (1924). A baldachin, or baldaquin (from Italian: baldacchino), is a canopy of state; architecturally it takes the form of a stationary canopy held up by columns, and is more correctly called a ciborium when over a high altar. |
Further information | The Pantocrator Monastery lies on a promontory above a harbour. According to Hasluck who visited in 1911, it was thought to have been founded by two Byzantine noblemen ca. 1357 according to an inscription in the katholikon which was constructed not long after the foundation. The noblemen and the monk Jonas (assumed to be the monastic originator) are buried in the narthex of the church. Repairs and new buildings were conducted in the 16th to the 19th century. The great tower is probably one of the 16th century additions. Hasluck, F.W. 1924. Athos and its Monasteries, London: Kegan Paul (pp. 156-158) |
