Scope and Content | Part of a group of images from explorations and excavations on the island of Melos conducted by the British School at Athens from 1896 to 1899. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Phylakopi pottery: painted geometric, Mykenaean sherd, pseudo Myk. Jug". |
Notes | The dates are based on the excavation seasons at Phylakopi. Plate XXV.9 in the Phylakopi publication shows the jug (lower right in the photograph) at a slightly different angle - see BSA SPHS 01/1936.5039 for the same pot at the angle shown in the plate. Pottery sequences were not established at the time of the Phylakopi excavations and 'Mycenaean' was applied to both Cretan Minoan and Mainland Helladic pottery. Geometric designs, at the time of excavation, were considered to be pre-'Mycenaean'. |
