Scope and Content | Part of the collection of images, 1906-1910, of the British School at Athens excavations at Sparta, Laconia. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Sparta: Inscription". |
Notes | The inscription was discovered in 1908, but appears to have been photographed in 1910 along with two others discovered in the same area (No. 2720 and 2721). The annotation on the border of the negative (A49413) is written on SPHS 7840 to 7844 and SPHS 8301 to 8307. The number may refer to a film roll and the dates of the images must be the same. Several of these (SPHS 7841 to 7844) are dated to 1910 in the negative register. Most of the images are similar views of inscribed stones, but SPHS 7340 shows the process of raising the inscribed stones from the ditch and SPHS 8302 to 8304 are images of pottery. |
