Further information | Early foundations of Karakallou Monastery were thought to be sometime in the 11th century as there is an abbot of Karakallou known from a document of 1087. Another document of the 15th century lists it as an Albanian monastery. However, Karakallou had a second Moldovan foundation in the 16th century when the monastery was re-built. The tower dates to this time and many of the other structures (including the katholikon were restored. A fire in 1874 destroyed the east range and the refectory (trapeza), but by the time Hasluck visited in 1911, it was nearly re-built and monastery prosperous. Hasluck, F.W. 1924.
