Notes | Date based on Hasluck's visit to Mount Athos to research his book, Mount Athos and its Monasteries (1924). A watercolour by Hasluck published in his book as pl. 5 (facing p. 22) shows a similar view, possibly derived from this photograpgh. |
Further information | Pyrgos Vasiliou or "Basil's Tower" was the probable site of an old 10th century Latin monastery along with its associated church of Ayios Vasilios. According to Hasluck in his book Athos and its Monasteries (p. 28), it is mentioned the 1394 list of twenty-five monasteries of Mount Athos and again in a list of 1420. In 1302 it is said to have been purchased by the Serbian King Milutin and the tower constructed to protect the Serbian Hilandar Monastery. The tower is sometimes referred to as Milutin'sTower. |
