Scope and Content | Part of a group of images from explorations and excavations on the island of Melos conducted by the British School at Athens from 1896 to 1899. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Prehistoric objects from Antiparos. ( B. S. A. III. P. 40)". |
Notes | Earliest date is based on Bent's excavations on Antiparos and latest date is based on Edgar's exploration of the Pelos area. The reference in the caption refers to the discussion of the tombs in general on p. 49 of Edgar, C.C. 1896/1897. 'Pre-Historic Tombs at Pelos' BSA 3: 35-51. In the same article, on page 49 is a drawing based on this photograph (fig. 18). It says that the figure is an illustration of "one branch of Aegean art that is not represented in the tombs of Pelos" These objects are from a small collection of metal objects in the British Museum that were deposited by Theodore Bent from his excavations in Antiparos (see JHS 5: 53). The image is a duplicate of BSA SPHS 01/1644.4119 (see related record). |
