Scope and Content | Part of a group of images from explorations and excavations on the island of Melos conducted by the British School at Athens from 1896 to 1899. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Phylakopi: 2 beaked jugs Phylakopi ix,4.xxiv,11". |
Notes | The dates are based on the excavation seasons at Phylakopi, although it must date prior to 1904 when it appears in the site publication. Although the SPHS register indicates that the sherds come from two beaked jugs, the sherds shown here are various sherds of open vessels. Pottery sequences were not established at the time of the Phylakopi excavations and 'Mycenaean' was applied to both Cretan Minoan and Mainland Helladic pottery. |
