Scope and Content | The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Olympia: Temple of Hera. Hill of Crous, from S. E.". |
Notes | Published in the first SPHS catalogue of the image collection in JHS for 1897, identified as catalogue number Dc 36. Date of the image, therefore, must date prior to 1897. Caption written below the photograph, cropped on both sides, reads: "[...] oldest temple at Olympia, probably before 800 B.C., and that of which most is preserved. The Her[...] [...] found in it. Nothing matches; some of the columns are a single stone, some many; some [...] 4 1/2 ft.; most have 20 flutes, but one has 16. The columns were originally wood, & [...] needed. One was still wood in Pausanias' day 160 A.D." |
