| Scope and Content | The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Cnossos: stepped theatrical area (BSA ix. fig 69)". |
| Notes | Date based on publication of 1903. After the excavation of the theatrical area, but before the reconstruction of the pitched roof above the throne room in 1904 (pers. comm. V. Fotou 2019). The image appears in Maraghiannis (1915) with the following description: "Tribune théâtrale. Cette petite cour ouverte est située prés de l'angle Nord-Ouest du Palais; le long trottoir dallé conduisant au 'Petit Palais', à l'Ouest, y aboutit. D'aprés l'analogie d'une tribune à marches ou à gradins toute semblable, découverte à Phaistos (Ant. Crét. I 1), il est permis de conclure qu'il s'agit ici d'une sorte de théâtre, ou de lieu de réunion, peut-être destiné à des danses religieuses, et non d'un escalier, comme la photographie le ferait supposer. Il semblerait que cet édiface ait joué un rôle important, dans la vie de la cour de Knossos, puisque plusieurs trottoirs consuisent de là à différentes parties du palais. BSA. IX 1902/3, 99-112." |
