| Notes | Sir Cecil Harcourt-Smith (1859 – 1944) was born in Middlesex and elected to join the British Museum, rather than go on to university. The museum allowed him to grow his reputation as an archaeologist; in 1895, he took up the Directorship of the BSA. During his three year tenure, Harcourt-Smith published the Annual's first edition and started excavations on Melos. Upon return to the UK, Harcourt-Smith worked at both the British and the Victoria and Albert museums. |
