Project Greek Dialects in Asia Minor 1909-1914
Scope and Content Part of a collection of images from Dawkins' travel to Pontus to investigate dialects in 1914. The original description in the SPHS register reads: "Asia Minor, Pontus Trebizond district".
Notes Date based on Dawkins' travel to the Pontus to investigate Greek dialects. His investigations were never completed due to the outbreak of WWI - see Mackridge BSA 85 (1990) p. 206. Also see B. Olsen (pp. 105-120) in Shankland, D. Archaeology, Anthropology and Heritage in the Balkans and Anatolia. 2004, Istanbul: Isis Press. The same church is shown in BSA SPHS 01/7362.C2413, BSA SPHS 01/6132.C3545 and BSA SPHS 01/6133.C3546. This church is photographed and shown in Talbot-Rice, D. and Millet, G. Byzantine Painting at Trebizond. 1936 with the caption: "Church Near Ayana Monastir" and the place is also called "Kurt Boghan" by them. Identified in Bryer, A. and Winfield, D. The Byzantine Monuments and Topography of the Pontos.1985, p 286 as the church of the Taxiarchai at Sachnoy [modern Köprüyani], destroyed between 1929 and 1957.
