The church of Palaiopanagia at present-day Manolada is a unique building in middle Byzantine architecture on a free cross plan with an attached roofed-in-five-parts narthex that encloses the west cross arm. The way the dome is supported strongly recalls contemporary pseudo-octagonal single cell churches. Traces of wall-paintings have recently been uncovered in the interior. The walling of the monument consists mainly of bricks and of low quality porous stone and marble: meander and dentil courses decorate all sides of the building, carefully cut stones have been used in the cloisonné masonry which is of the highest quality while the west façade of the church is built in opus isodomum (regular coursed masonry). The attached two-columned (?) propylon has been destroyed. Recent research proposed a date for the monument at the end of the 12th c. |
