The original identity, plan, decoration and date of Vefa Kilise Camii (Hagios Theodoros?) remain obscure. The core of the building has been dated to the 11th/12th c. while the masonry on the outer narthex and the arcaded façade seems to suggest a date in the Palaiologan period. A two-storey annex was added on the north flank of the church while the square chamber southeast of the minaret must have been a belfry. The architectural sculpture consists of re-used early Christian material. The three domes were covered with mosaics which were removed in the 20th c. |
