This is a preliminary drawing in pencil. It is annotated in pencil on the upper left-hand corner, "St. Sostes, Skripou, Greece. measured and drawin on the spot, October 1897" and signed in ink in the lower right-hand corner, "Pieter Rodeck's work L. Alma-Tadema". Further annotation in pencil survives. The church is referred to as 'Hagios Sostes'. |
| Further information | The small church of Hagios Sozon at Skripou is a simple domed triconch dated to the 12th c. Particularly impressive in the walling of the building are the large scale ancient spolia which have been used mainly in the lower courses. The dome of the church is quite unique too: it combines, not always with success, elements which are usually found in dome systems of Constantinopolitan monuments. The conches are not roofed separately while gables are formed only on the north and south sides. |
