A.J.B. Wace Papers: Pembroke College Cambridge

Pembroke College, Cambridge holds a small collection of material relating to Alan John Bayard Wace. The collection consists of 9 small field notebooks dating from the early 1900s and used during archaeological work in Greece, papers relating to Wace’s academic career, and copies of some of his publications, principally offprints from journals. The notebooks and papers were passed to the College in 1958 by Wace's wife, Helen. The copies of publications may have been passed to Pembroke directly from Wace, as is customary for Fellows to do.

Wace came up to Pembroke College in 1898. He held a scholarship and took part I of the Classics Tripos in 1901, gaining a first, before studying Classical Archaeology for part II, where he also gained a first with distinction (1902). Wace’s connection with Pembroke continued when he was elected as Fellow in 1904. He held this position until 1913. He would later return to Cambridge, and Pembroke, when elected to the Laurence Chair of Classical Archaeology in 1934. He held this chair, alongside a Fellowship at Pembroke College, until his retirement in 1944. He was made an Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College in 1951.
