Olympeion Rescue Excavation 1887
Excavation: Rescue Excavation
Excavations were conducted after the accidental road improvements cut part the north end of the Peribolos. This exposed a portico of the temple; the base of the capitals and ante were exposed and a complete plan was able to be drawn and its date determined to be from the time of Hadrian. Near the portico were the remains of an earlier building with large column drum segments determined to be Doric. Further excavations Sponsored by the Society of Dilettanti were carried out to determine the plan of the temple itself.
Active in 1887.
