Laconia Survey 1983-1988
Fieldwork:
The field survey stemmed from excavations at the Menelaion in the preceding decade, hoping to place it within a wider context, and in the hope it could broaden our understanding of a region whose archaeology was hitherto largely unexplored. It was an intensive survey aimed at locating sites of all periods in the region. Finds ranged from Prehistoric to recent, with the majority of locations belonging to the Bronze Age, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. The range of sites also varied, with bridges, farm-steads, towns, quarries, and shrines being discovered. In total 461 sites were located and reported on, greatly expanding our macro understanding of the region.
Active from 1983 to 1988.
