Ithaca Excavation 1937-1938
Fieldwork:
The aim of this project was to examine the sites of Stavros, Tris Langadas Hagios Athanasios and Aetos. In Stavros, Hellenistic tombs from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC were discovered to have disturbed Prehistoric settlements. A Mycenaean site with large quantities of pottery was excavated at Tris Langadas. The object of the excavation at Hagios Athanasios was to examine and date the building mentioned by Vollgraff in BCH 1905, 153 ff.. Pottery from the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC was found in this building. Finally, in Aetos were found Proto-Geometric and Geometric pottery as well as the foundations of a 5th century building overlaying those of a temple probably destroyed in the 7th century BC.
Active from 1937 to 1939.
