Sparta Excavation 1924-1927
Fieldwork:
The decision was taken to return for the first time since 1910, starting with excavation of the theatre. The theatre offered difficulties in dating due to the considerable degree of destruction and rebuilding during the Byzantine period. Four different period of building are visible at the theatre, which can be no earlier than Hellenistic, and the stage space and some of the front rows were cleared. Work on the Acropolis was carried almost completing the excavation of the votive deposit in the area between the Chalkioikos Sanctuary-wall and the back wall of the cavea. Other buildings received excavation, but were reported as having been in a bad state of preservation.
Active from 1924 to 1927.
