Byzantine Architectural Study
Research programme:
Byzantine architectural studies at the British School at Athens were carried out from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century with the assistance of the Byzantine Research and Publication Fund. Although the Fund was formally created in 1908 to support this work, earlier work by Robert Weir Schultz and Sidney Barnsley preceded this. The BRPF provided monetary support for a number of projects dealing with the study of Byzantine architecture in Constantinople, Thessaloniki, Athens, Paros, the Peloponnese and other areas in the Eastern Mediterranean. It was not until 1937 that the BSA took over the management of the Fund at the request of Weir Schultz in his capacity as Honorary Secretary of the Fund. In 1951, after Weir Schultz's death, complete ownership of the Fund was given to the BSA. Documents accumulated from 1888-1949 by members of the BRPF and BSA form the basis of the BSA's Byzantine Researh Fund Archive.
Active from 1888 to 1949.
