Evrotas Valley Geoarchaeological Survey 1999
Fieldwork:
The survey of the Evrotas valley was undertaken to reconstruct the depositional history of the valley and to relate depositional events to human activity. The study area corresponds to the fans emanating from Taygetus on the w side and an area on the E valley side between Aphyssou and the Menelaion. 1999 demonstrated that the fan systems in the w of the basin contain suitable material for luminescence dating. The Laconia Survey and follow-up projects have identified Classical and Roman sites in this locality. The data collected also suggest that the Evrotas has cut downwards through its bed since the Roman period, leaving sites that were once on the floodplain high and dry. Wilkinson's study from the survey, 'Geoarchaeological Studies of the Spartan Acropolis and Evrotas Valley: Some Preliminary Conclusions', was published in W. G. Cavanagh and S. Walker's , Sparta in Laconia ... BSA Studies 4 that same year.
