Sparta Theatre Excavation 1992-1998
Fieldwork: ST
The purpose of the excavation was to clarify details of the structure that had partly been revealed in earlier excavation (1906-9 and 1924-8). Finds included late Roman portrait busts and revealed the theatre was partially destroyed, perhaps to help construct the early Medieval walls (from which spolia has been found in abundance). Evidence suggests the theatre was originally of Doric design and developed in two later, Roman building phases. Much of the excavation focused on the stage area originally excavated in 1924 and taking accurate measurements and recordings; this also involved the rephotographing and analysis of finds from 1924. A trackway for a moveable stage building was succesfully excavated.
Active from 1992 to 1998.
