Kenchreai Quarry Landscapes 2013-2016

Research programme:

The goals of the surveys and excavations of this project were to: 1. identify the periods of quarrying and the types and locations of post-quarrying activity. 2.From the first season, focus on more specific areas in the landscape. 3. investigate site formation processes relating to the deposition of chipped stone lithics and clarify both the character and chronology of lithic manufacture in the area. 4. to date and characterise activity in broad terms of settlement, supply, or production, and to assess the scale on which provision was made for different forms of activity. The project permitted a holistic understanding of a major Greek quarry complex, the material culture of stone extraction, the subsequent use of the space, and its integration into local and regional historical and cultural contexts. In the 2016 excavation, Hellenistic–Middle Roman transport amphorae, cups and cookwares were found around underlying fire-damaged soil layers and lots of prehistoric (including Late Helladic) pottery was found (in Complex A) and, even more, lithics. The material in the site suggests continuation of occupation from Early–Late Helladic into the Early Iron Age. A near complete hiatus follows until the Archaic–Classical transition, when activity resumed within widely separate areas. There was activity continuing through Hellenistic into Roman times in the landscape as well.
