Sparta Excavation 1906-1910
Fieldwork:
From 1906 to 1910, the British School at Athens excavated at a number of sites in the Sparta region, concentrating on areas in the ancient town, at the Theatre, the Roman walls, the Agora, and the Acropolis. Also locations near the Eurotas river were excavated, principally the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia. Further afield, excavations took place at the Menaleion and the nearby Bronze Age settlement on the opposite side of the river. Trials excavations also took place at Magoula to the west of Sparta and at Kalyvia tes Sochis to the south. These excavations, combined with the topographical surveys of Laconia and the minor test excavations conducted at Geraki, Anelona and Thalamai in 1905, provided a picture of the Spartan territory from prehistory through Byzantine times.
Active from 1906 to 1910.
