Strymon Delta Survey 1982
Fieldwork:
This survey was a collaborative project carried out by members of the British School at Athens, the Greek Archaeological Service and the Institute of Oceanographic and Fisheries Research. This was a continuation of the survey project of Byzantine remains in the area around Khrysoupolis in 1979. The aim of the project was to study the relationship between environmental change and the sequence of settlement on and around the delta, with particular reference to the ancient sites of Eion, Amphipolis and Khrysoupolis. The survey resulted in the discovery of several small sites with evidence of late Byzantine occupation. In addition, detailed mapping was conducted of the east side of the delta and of Prophitis Elias, the proposed site of ancient Eion.
