Sparta Menelaion Excavation 1973-1980
Fieldwork:
Excavation took place to clarify the date of the Mycenaean building first excavated in 1909 and 1910. The site is dominated by the Archaic and Classical hero-shrine. The previous excavation had found a building facing east-west where two rooms had flanked a central corridor, which had supposedly been destroyed by fire in LHIIIB. Several years of excavation discovered this building to have been a part of a much wider set of buildings, revealing a major Helladic site. Evidence from Aetos Hill suggests the area had been occupied from the Middle Helladic period, with a major construction period in LHIIB. By LHIIIB, the time of its destruction, much of the complex was in disuse. Pottery and votive remains indicate that during the Archaic period this space had maintained some spiritual importance to the community.
Active from 1973 to 1980.
