Sparta Menelaion Excavation 1973-1980: Season 1973
Excavation: Research excavation
Excavation took place to clarify the date of the Mycenaean building first excavated in 1909 and 1910. The site is dominated by the Archaic and Classical hero-shrine. The previous excavation had found a building facing east-west where two rooms had flanked a central corridor, which had supposedly been destroyed by fire in LHIIIB. Traces of an earlier building had also been found. The first year of excavation discovered this building to have been a part of a much wider complex than previously thought. It appears the area had been occupied from the Middle Helladic period, with the complex having built in LHIIB. By the LHIIIB, the time of its destruction, much of the complex was in disuse.
Active from /05/1973 to /06/1973.
