Cyzicus, Mysia and Bithynia

Research programme:

F.W. Hasluk and A.E. Henderson surveyed the ancient town of Cyzicus between 1902 and 1903 on behalf of the British School at Athens. Numerous artile resulted by both Hasluck and Henderson on the structures of the ancient city, the sculptures and inscriptions as well as observations of the surrounding area which Hasluck continued to explore up to 1907. In 1906, Hasluck travelled with J.M. Dawkins from Smyrna (Izmir) while visiting sites along the railway north. They then travelled by road to Soma, Balukiser and then on to Bursa and Nicaea (Iznik). In the spring of 1907, Hasluck visited a number of Hellespontine site with J. Baker Penoyre including Nicomedia, the Sangarius bridge, Magnesia ad Sipylum (Manisa). At the conclusion of that trip, Hasluck surveyed the Marmara Islands to record archaeological and historical remains. Hasluck concluded his exploration of Bithynia where he made a study of Byzantine churches (Tirilye,, Syne, Kalolimno), fortresses (Cesarea, Kete, Koubouklia, Besbicus on Kalolimno) and inscriptions. Hasluck wrote his dissertation on Cyzicus and the surrounding area, published in 1910.

Active from 1902 to 1907.
